چکیده

We fit X-ray spectral data in the thermal dominant or high soft state of two dynamically confirmed black holes, GRO J1655-40 and 4U 1543-47, and estimate the dimensionless spin parameters a∗ ≡ a/M of the two holes. Our spectral model consists of one principal component, a multitemperature blackbody disk model that includes all general relativistic effects, plus standard low-energy absorption and Gaussian line components. For GRO J1655-40, using a luminosity-dependent spectral hardening factor computed for a non-LTE relativistic accretion disk, we estimate a∗ ∼ 0.8 and ∼ 0.7 − 0.75, respectively, from ASCA and RXTE data. For 4U 1543-47, we estimate a∗ ∼ 0.85−0.9 from RXTE data. We conclude that neither black hole is likely to have a spin approaching the theoretical maximum a∗ = 1. On the other hand, the spin of 4U 1543-47 appears to be too large to be explained by disk accretion over the lifetime of the system, which suggests that our measurements are sensitive to the natal spins of these black holes. Subject headings: X-ray: stars — binaries: close — accretion, accretion disks — black hole physics — stars: individual (4U 1543-47, GRO J1655-40 )

Estimating the Spins of Stellar-Mass Black Holes by Fitting Their Continuum Spectra

We have used the Novikov-Thorne thin disk model to fit the continuum X-ray spectra of three transient black hole X-ray binaries in the thermal state. From the fits we estimate the dimensionless spin parameters of the black holes to be: 4U 1543–47, a∗ ≡ a/M = 0.7− 0.85; GRO J1655–40, a∗ = 0.65− 0.8; GRS 1915+105, a∗ = 0.98− 1. We plan to expand the sample of spin estimates to about a dozen over ...

Forty Years of X-Ray Binaries

In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...

Black Hole Spin via Continuum Fitting and the Role of Spin in Powering Transient Jets

The spins of ten stellar black holes have been measured using the continuumfitting method. These black holes are located in two distinct classes of X-ray binary systems, one that is persistently X-ray bright and another that is transient. Both the persistent and transient black holes remain for long periods in a state where their spectra are dominated by a thermal accretion disk component. The ...

Measuring Black Hole Spin via the X-ray Continuum Fitting Method: beyond the Thermal Dominant State

All prior work on measuring the spins of stellar-mass black holes via the X-ray continuum-fitting method has relied on the use of weakly-Comptonized spectra obtained in the thermal dominant state. Using a self-consistent Comptonization model, we show that one can analyze spectra that exhibit strong power-law components and obtain values of the inner disk radius, and hence spin, that are consist...

Inferring the Inclination of a Black Hole Accretion Disk from Observations of its Polarized Continuum Radiation

Spin parameters of stellar-mass black holes in X-ray binaries are currently being estimated by fitting the X-ray continuum spectra of their accretion disk emission. For this method, it is necessary to know the inclination of the X-rayproducing inner region of the disk. Since the inner disk is expected to be oriented perpendicular to the spin axis of the hole, the usual practice is to assume tha...
